Everybody has their own unique fitness goals and lifestyles. No two people are the same. In order to make progress, it is first important to have an understanding of our current health and fitness level. The major components of fitness include muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, body composition, flexibility, coordination and balance. These are all areas that can be measured and improved upon in relation to our fitness goals. Other health factors, such as age, exercise and injury history, mental illnesses, and chronic health problems, are also taken into consideration to ensure safety and comfort. Depending on the needs of the individual, assessments can be basic or very intricate, and reassessments should be done to determine the success of the workout program.

Exercise is important for more than just looking good. Being strong allows us to have more energy to be productive throughout the day. Bigger and stronger muscles burn more calories at rest, thus controlling body fat levels. Strength prevents acute or chronic injuries, as well as arthritis and osteoporosis. Strength allows us to perform physical tasks with ease, from walking up stairs to moving furniture to carrying groceries. Strength training extends our lifespan because it improves our heart function, blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Beyond the physical benefits, strength training also improves our mood, self-confidence, cognitive function, and overall mental well-being.
