Corrective Exercise Programming

As much as we want to feel sweaty and sore during a workout, it’s important to include exercises that correct any muscular imbalances as well. Corrective exercises are any exercises that are done in order to produce a desirable change in our movement patterns, thus reducing and/or preventing pain and risk of injuries. When we can move properly without pain, we are able to become stronger, faster, more flexible, and achieve our fitness goals faster.

  • You have been injured during a workout
  • Daily tasks, such as driving or lifting boxes, tend to drain your energy

Postural Correction

Good posture means having the correct alignment of various body parts working against gravity during standing, seated or lying down positions. If a particular muscle is weak or injured, if the body is overweight, or if one body position is maintained over an extended period of time (such as sitting at a desk), then other muscles have to compensate by working harder. This typically creates tension and pain. A common postural problem is having a lower back that is overarched, often caused by tight hips, weak glutes and a weak core. This results in lower back pain. Postural correction would include an assessment of your natural posture, identifying problematic areas, and stretching or strengthening the muscles necessary to fix the problem.

This is for you if…

  • You have unexplained tension, pain and stiffness throughout your body
  • You have low energy levels, difficulty breathing and discomfort when lying down
  • You have a hunched appearance, a protruding belly, or “knock-knees”

When you book an appointment at Body Smart Health & Fitness, we will match you with one of our experts that is best suited for your needs. They will perform a thorough assessment to identify key areas for improvement and design an individualized program based on your current fitness level. Repetitive Strain Injury

Repetitive Strain Injuries

Muscles or joints that are overused or engaged in long-term repetitive movements can result in strain injuries. Symptoms can include pain, tension, numbness, stiffness, cramping or weakness in the muscle or joint. Commonly affected areas include the wrists, elbows, neck, shoulders and knees. Causes vary depending on the lifestyle of the individual – for example, runners may experience knee strain while hairdressers overuse their shoulders. Treatment often involves resting from the activity causing the injury (if possible) or modifying how the activity is done, such as using ergonomic work chairs or wearing a protective brace. Alternatively, the areas affected can be stretched and strengthened, or pain medications can be taken for temporary immediate relief. When left untreated, repetitive strain injuries can become more serious and require surgery.

This is for you if…

  • You experience pain or discomfort during your exercise routine or at work
  • You have been injured at work or during a workout
  • You repeat movements chronically with minimal rest, such as typing or playing golf
  • You have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves, or similar conditions

When you book an appointment at Body Smart Health & Fitness, we will match you with one of our experts that is best suited for your needs. Core Stability

Core Stability Programming

Our core muscles are much more intricate than just the defined six-pack abs we see in movies and commercials. Our core includes just about every muscle that isn’t a limb, such as our hips, glutes, lower back, obliques, pelvic floor, and inner abdominal muscles. The core is responsible for resisting movement, stabilizing our spine, and for helping drive power through our arms and legs. Imagine that you’re throwing a ball as far as you possibly can – surely you are holding the ball in your hand, and your arm is the last thing on your body to move, but without the assistance of your glutes, abs and lower back, you wouldn’t be able to throw very far. Another common scenario is doing a shoulder check while driving – if your core is flexible and strong, you’ll be able to turn around more easily without straining your neck and shoulders. A weak core can lead to lower back pain and injuries, incorrect posture, incontinence, difficulty breathing, and poor exercise coordination. Core stability is crucial for strength, balance, power, speed and injury prevention.

This is for you if…

  • You feel back pain or neck tension throughout the day
  • You have difficulty breathing or have experienced incontinence, or have given birth
  • You have poor balance and coordination
  • You have the appearance of a protruding stomach despite your current weight

Back Pain

Back Pain

Getting older doesn’t have to mean walking hunched over or waking up with back pain. Indeed, many causes of back pain are completely preventable and treatable. Weak core and glute muscles can cause the back muscles to overcompensate, resulting in tension and pain. Sudden bending, lifting or pulling movements can also result in back pain in an untrained individual. Other causes can include arthritis, disc problems, or spinal stenosis, which must be diagnosed by a professional. Treatment will revolve around exercise and lifestyle management to improve strength and posture, but can also include massage, injections, or alternative treatments such as dry needling.

This is for you if…

  • You experience pain or discomfort in your back during your exercise routine
  • You have numbness in any of your limbs, but especially the legs
  • Daily tasks, such as driving or lifting boxes, are exhausting or painful
  • It’s difficult for you to take deep breaths, lay down, bend over, or twist side to side

When you book an appointment at Body Smart Health & Fitness, we will match you with one of our experts that is best suited for your needs. They will perform a thorough assessment to identify key areas for improvement and design an individualized program based on your current fitness level.
