Car Accident Rehab

Car Accident Rehabilitation

At some point in time, many of us will be involved in a motor vehicle collision. Cars are heavy and fast, and even minor accidents can have physical repercussions for our bodies. Swelling is extremely common as the blood rushes to the area to begin healing, but this can cause stiffness or pain in the meantime. Whiplash, ringing in the ears, mood or cognitive changes, dizziness and blurry vision are various symptoms of head injuries and are also common and can vary in severity. Shock and stress from a car accident may prevent us from noticing symptoms until several days later, which is why an immediate medical examination is highly recommended. Regardless of the injury, recovery is possible with the help of a professional such as a physiotherapist.

This is for you if…

  • You have been involved or injured in a motor vehicle accident
  • You have coverage through ICBC

Workplace Injury

Workplace Injuries

Whether you work in an office, retail store, or a construction site, workplace injuries can happen to anyone. Repetitive motions or inactivity over an extended period of time, such as scanning items, hammering nails, or sitting at a desk can cause chronic injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or low back pain. Accidents in the workplace, such as slipping on a wet floor or straining your shoulder while lifting a heavy object, can result in acute injuries ranging in severity. These injuries affect one’s quality of life, limiting the ability to enjoy other activities. It’s also important to treat such injuries immediately in order to prevent a loss of productivity at work and a loss of income. Equally important is education on preventing reinjury and maintaining a safe and comfortable working environment. It is recommended to speak with your employer about workplace insurance benefits prior to receiving therapy in order to limit personal expenses.

Performance Rehabilitation

Performance rehabilitation is most often directed towards athletes or advanced lifters, where the goal of treatment is to improve upon the athlete’s sport or to return to a baseline of fitness following an injury. This process can take weeks, months, or in serious cases, even years, in order to transition back to an active lifestyle and regain strength, endurance and mobility. However, treatment doesn’t end once an athlete gets back in the game – maintenance of good posture and movement mechanics is integral to preventing reinjury and ensuring progress.

This is for you if…

  • You have specific fitness or athletic goals that have been stalled due to pain or injury
  • You have lost strength and endurance as a result of an illness or injury
  • You need to improve your fitness level to participate in sports or athletic events

Deconditioning Post Injury

Deconditioning Post-Injury

Regardless of the cause or extent of an injury, part of the recovery process involves resting the affected area as the body heals itself. Unfortunately, this often means limiting the frequency and intensity of our workouts, and the result is a loss of strength, endurance and mobility. As frustrating as it may be to lose fitness progress, recovering is necessary in order to return to a more active lifestyle. Signs of deconditioning include muscle weakness and atrophy, digestive problems, joint stiffness, blood clots, skin sores (from bedrest), increased resting heart rate and blood pressure, difficulty breathing during activity, and even anxiety and depression. However, with modifying and adjusting our workouts, it is always possible to progress after an injury.

Pre- and Postnatal Training

As long as a woman has no medical complications, physical activity is highly encouraged before, during and after pregnancy in order to ensure optimal health of both the baby and herself. Active pregnant women tend to have lower rates of gestational diabetes, reduced constipation and incontinence, better mood and weight management, fewer labour complications, faster recovery after birth, and increased energy levels. However, there are some limitations for pregnant exercisers, such as the avoidance of certain lying down positions, high temperatures (such as hot yoga), and activities with a higher risk for falling or injury. Always consult with a doctor prior to beginning an exercise program while pregnant, and it is recommended to seek supervision from a personal trainer as well.

This is for you if…

  • You intend on becoming pregnant or are currently pregnant
  • You have given birth and wish to improve your fitness level
  • You are recovering from a traumatic birthing event
